Tourist Attraction
Open year-round
Full of such high mountains 1,000 meters above the sea level as Odaesan Mountain, Gyebangsan Mountain and Taegisan Mountain, PyeongChang-gun embraces Weojeongsa Temple and Sangwonsa Temple, so it is considered as the best place to explore in Youngseo area. Since the novelist Lee Hyo-seok’s birthplace is located in PyeongChang, it is visited by many tourists. In particular, when buckwheat flowers bloom at the end of August and in early September, Lee Hyo-seok's birthplace and Gasan Park in Bongpyeong are crowded with visitors. Gasan Park was established in November 1993 by county residents who donated money to honor literary achievements accumulated by Gasan Lee Hyo-seok , the author of "Memilkkotpilmuryeop" who stood tall in the history of contemporary literature. It is equipped with a sculpture plaza featuring Gasan’s Statue and Literature Monument as well as amenities including various benches in an area covering about 40,000 square meters. It is frequented by many literary enthusiasts due to such various vestiges of Gasan as nearby Lee Hyo-seok’s birthplace and the marketplace, and Hyo-seok Essay Contest that had been held here early September every year was expanded to Hyo-seok Culture Festival in 1999. It aims to promote and further advance Gasan’s literature centering around Gasan Literature Promotion Society composed by residents.
